Soil Formation

Soil Formation

Soil is known to many people as land, and is very important for the life of man, animals and plants. It is from the soil that we remove a large part of the food we consume daily, and it is also it that provides us with so many other raw materials to make human life possible. But do you know where the soil comes from?

Objectives

Enable students to verify the steps that occur for rock to turn the soil, with different views from the processes that involve the the soil formation.

Necessary materials

- Wooden or plastic case with glass front panel

- Rock (with large fragments and smaller fragments), gravel, sand, soil (of different types)

- Dry humus or leaf

Note: There are no space restrictions.

Set Up

Inside the partitions of the wooden box, on the first partition put only rocks. On the second place rock on the bottom with some gravel on top and sand last. In the third, add rock, followed by gravel, sand and some soil. On the fourth follow as on the third but I stick another type of soil that I remember horizon O. And in the last division put more soil and gravel, reducing the amount of rock.

Goals

Explain to students how the soil is formed, and how rock becomes soil.
