Rocks collection

Rocks are natural multigranular aggregate formed from one or more minerals. Rocks usually forms units that, by the extent they occupy, constitutes an important part of the solid Earth. Three main rock formation processes are recognized:

Melting silicates, or magma which when solidified produces glass or an aggregate of one or more minerals. The rocks that are formed in this way are called igneous or magmatic.

Sedimentary rocks consist of both a fragment, which originated from pre-existing rocks and minerals were deposited by mechanical or biological action, as well as chemical or biochemical precipitations that occurred in a fluid medium.

Metamorphic rocks are those in which the original minerals and / or textures have been clearly altered by recrystallization or deformation. The metamorphism that causes these changes can occur at great depths in the Earth's crust, or close to the Earth's surface and caused by the intrusion of a heated mass of igneous rock.

Objectives

Demonstrate the origins of the soil, which can be derived from any of these types of rocks or from one more. In addition to presenting some aspects of the soil that come from each type of rock.

 Materials

- Sample of rocks of the three classes: igneous or magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary

- Sand

- Minerals of the main classes

- Box to organize

Set up

Present in each box the division of rocks into classes and minerals as well.

Lesson

Have students list which soils are derived from each type of rock and which minerals are most present in the soil.
